Useless Preparation
I didn’t think I’d suffer
When you turned away
I’d been bracing for it
Since the day that your touch changed
My skin threw up the flag of red
When it felt you hesitate
The pressure of your touch
Was different on that day
It meant the end was coming
I could see that clearly
So I began the process
Of unplugging my worn heart
Extracting all the things
That I put into us
I rebuilt the walls
That you had broken through
Bricked up the open doorways
Your love hammered into them
I felt secure and safe
Inside my fortress
Until that final day
I felt the ground quake
The reckoning of ending
Rattled my whole heart
Much more than I anticipated
I thought you made me stronger
But without you now
I’m weak
